Djoa Strassburg graduated with a master’s degree in architecture from ETH Zurich in 2020 and has been working independently since 2022. Sustainable, circular, and climate-friendly structures – whether social or technical – are at the core of her work.

The use of local materials, carefully crafted and thoughtfully integrated into the design, enables her to create durable architecture that forges a strong connection between structure, material, and the natural environment.

Artist Residency Gambia

Location

Serekunda, GMB

Status

Designed for the Ngala Gallery and Museum, this artists’ residency in Brufut Heights is conceived as a single-storey villa that seamlessly blends living and working spaces for creative practice.
The building is organized into a sequence of enclosed rooms and shaded outdoor areas, arranged around a generous L-shaped garden.

A perimeter wall defines the property and frames both covered and open-air spaces that function as exhibition zones for art and sculpture. Large openings and expansive glazing bring abundant natural light into the interiors, providing ideal conditions for artistic work.

The architecture encourages a fluid relationship between inside and outside, allowing the boundaries between dwelling and studio, between living and creating, to dissolve.
In this way, the residency becomes an atelier house where art and everyday life coexist harmoniously.

This private spa and wellness pavilion was designed and built on the terrace of a multi-family residence, transforming an unused rooftop into a serene retreat.
The new structure subtly divides the terrace into a public and a private zone, while creating a secluded garden terracebetween the upper apartment façade and the spa volume.

The wellness area comprises a massage room, a hammam, a spacious shower and exfoliation room, and a toilet — all arranged to ensure both intimacy and fluid circulation.

Responding to the client’s wish to evoke Moroccan craftsmanship and atmosphere, the design integrates perforated wooden arches that filter and diffuse light, casting delicate patterns across the interior.
The matte black marble used in the hammam and shower forms a striking contrast to the warm, gentle tones of natural wood, creating an ambience that is at once contemporary, tactile, and deeply relaxing.

This project involved the renovation of an apartment from the 1980s — a well-proportioned space whose layout remained functional, but whose materials and finishes no longer reflected contemporary living standards.
Both the kitchen and bathrooms required a complete redesign.

To create a brighter and more fluid living environment, the glass door that once separated the private and communal areas was removed, and a warm wooden parquet floor was installed throughout.
A new, light-toned kitchen was designed for optimal spatial flow and everyday functionality.
The bathrooms, compact in size, were reimagined with large mirrors and pale tiles, visually expanding the space and bringing a sense of calm and generosity.

Elsewhere, simple yet thoughtful interventions were made to refresh the apartment while keeping renovation costs minimal — breathing new life into an existing structure without compromising its character.

Located on a narrow, elongated plot overlooking the Atlantic, this villa was conceived as both a private residence and a guesthouse — a place where intimacy and hospitality coexist seamlessly.

The design challenge lay in creating a home that feels open and airy despite the constrained footprint. Generous openings, internal courtyards, and carefully oriented volumes allow natural light to permeate the interiors throughout the day, while facilitating cross-ventilation in response to the coastal climate.

From nearly every room, framed vistas of the sea establish a constant dialogue between inside and outside. Private suites and shared living spaces are interwoven with terraces and shaded passages, ensuring that moments of retreat and togetherness can coexist fluidly.

The result is a light-filled, climate-responsive dwelling that celebrates the beauty of its site — embracing the horizon, the breeze, and the rhythm of coastal life in Saly.

The project in Mermoz, Dakar, features a 180° ocean view and a 180° sweeping view of the city.
The five-story building follows the topography from the urban space to the seashore and offers its residents a pool on the communal roof terrace.
The third floor was redesigned by Studio Strassburg. The floor plan was reconfigured to better suit the client’s needs in terms of spatial flow, materiality, and functionality.

The office space at Kanzleistrasse was lately used by a clothing store.
The floor was covered by a carpet and subsequently installed plaster walls blocked the natural way of circulating in the space.
When renovating the premises, attention was paid to restoring the original condition. The attractive herringbone parquet flooring was re-exposed, as were the terra cotta stone tiles. Original passageways were restored. A simple wood and plexiglass construction was used to create a room divider of sliding door elements, which allows light to continue to flow through the space and at the same time provides a flexible use of the space.

The property located in Saly is characterized by traditional architectural features: The roof made of woven straw and wood, the wide overhanging canopy that makes the indoor climate pleasant and the framing of the windows, as well as the natural stones in the facade.
The client wanted a stronger relationship between the living room, kitchen, dining room and the garden, and a new floor that would accommodate an additional room with an ensuite bathroom.

The architectural design language is characterized by a strong horizontality, large spans and generous openings, precisely framing the environment. Which allow a fusion of the exterior and interior space.

Soft colours and natural materials such as stone and wood are being used for the interior design scheme.

Phase: Planning

The building site in Serekunda, Gambia is characterized by its lush palm forest on the slope that connects the terrain with the beach and the incredible sea view.

An ensemble of three houses is to be built, each of which has a different typology due to its different use.

A common design language, the use of natural building materials, such as rammed earth and pressed earth blocks, and a bioclimatic architecture are at the heart of the project.

Created as part of the transformation of a single-family house into a multi-family residence, this lightweight pergola provides both weather protection and shade for the newly added external staircase and terrace.
A new passage connects the upper apartment to the street level, while the pergola shelters the stair from rain and snow.

To reinforce the project’s circular and sustainable approach, old, rusted railings found in the basement were restored and repurposed for the terrace and staircase balustrades.
Designed with slender columns and tapering roof beams, the structure integrates quietly and respectfully with the listed historic building, appearing as though it had always belonged.
Its refined, almost Japanese character and use of reclaimed and natural materials reflect the studio’s commitment to sustainable, timeless architecture.

A generously grown garden flows around the semi-detached house from 1978. This was rebuilt with simple means. New skylights, room extensions, a winter garden and the enlargement of the balcony create a strong connection between house and garden. The living spaces, following the topography, gradually develop towards the garden and the large-format openings create a strong relation to the outside.

The generation house from the 1920s served for a long time as a single-family house with an annex which was used as a doctor's office.
The client's wish was to divide the house into two two-story apartments and convert the annex into a studio apartment.
During the conversion, it was important to bring the original materials of the building back to light, to maintain them and to enhance them by combining them with modern, complementary elements.
To ensure the separation of the residential units without losing living space through access area, an external access, a staircase with an arbor was designed.
